That seal is a common problem on these older TO's. 50+ years service ain't too bad for a leather seal, is it! My steering box seals leak terrible also. One of these days I going to have to do something about it! I seen posts both here and on the N board where guys just pump the gearbox full of grease and say to heck with the seal. I'm leaning that way myself. Over on the N forum, they are always talking about using J.D. corn head grease to fill the steering gearbox. I think I've seen a couple ads for specialty grease where the grease sticks to moving parts (like gears), flows under shear, but does not flow, or run otherwise. That sounds like the kind of grease to use. Maybe that's what's special about corn head grease? Greasing your steering box isn't necessarily a one way trip either. You can shoot your gearbox up with grease, then rebuild later... much later. You will have a bit of a mess to clean out the grease, then switch back to GL-1 (same as the tranny) after the rebuild, if you like. George (Full of ideas, not necessary solutions)
