Diesel or kerosene might remove some crud. Reaching your hand into the drain holes as best you can will remove some. Probably you won't get the majority of it either way. When you refill, just put in 4-5 gals, and let it sit a few hours and then check the level. Then add slowly, let it sit, check it, etc. If you overfill, draw it down to the correct level as too much might tend to bleed thru the axle seals quicker.
