There are lots of good advice here. I would say get the books by Joe Salatin. He runs a very successful diversified farm out east. Also, I was reminded of a paraphrased quote from Bill Radil "If we were all still farming with steel-wheeled equipment we'd still be making money." Don't get too far into the hole to start that you can never get out. Giving a hand at a neighbors' would be great for both of you as well.
