I had that problem on my SMTA, both shaft and pedal were worn. I used the washer trick above and helped some but finally ran a piece of strap metal foreward bolted to where the clutch return spring anchors, runs next to the pedal then ran a short piece out from the top of the center housing bolted to this one. Sort of a 2 sided box setup. Not as pretty as it could be but keeps the pedal from going past the corner of the platform. Saw one at a show with a piece welded on the bottom of the platform on the outside of the pedal to hold it in. At least my version is removable if and when I can fix the problem right. Noticed Denny's Carb Shop lists the cross shafts for $45 whick doesn't sound too bad but you would still need to bush the pedal
