I am trying to get the glow plugs on my IH 354 working. These glow plugs haven't worked since I've owned the tractor but I really want to be able to use them. I've read through all the posts I can find related to this but I have something happening that I haven't seen mentioned before.
First, I am using the .9V loop end plugs. I believe I have them wired correctly in a "series". My indicator on the dash will glow or light up. Based on the other threads I've read, the indicator wouldn't be working if I didn't have them wired correctly. Is this correct?
When I try using the glow plugs, the insulator on the #2 position glow plug (second from the front of the engine) begins smoking. It looks like it is melting. I'm afraid to let the glow plugs try to get hot enough to crank the engine because of the smoking insulator.
What would cause this insulator to smoke or overheat?
I've got a test light and used it to check current at each of the glow plugs. As I mentioned above, the indicator on the dash will light. The #4 plug has a good, bright light on the test light. The #3 position is probably about 1/2 as bright as the #4 plug. #2 is even less bright than #3. The #1 plug (closest to the front) is so dim you have to strain to see the slightest glow on the test light.
I've seen the comments/suggestions about converting the "parallel" plugs but the ones I've got are new so I really want to try to use them if possible.
