Maybe hit something with the mower that started teeth breaking then momentum of the mower stripped more teeth. Or one tooth broke and wedged the gears. With pto engaged the pto shaft at the transmission front should turn without much drag. If that seems okay and the pto turns smooth you could change the oil in it to check for any metal. You will need to remove the retaining ring lower pto shaft in center housing at rear bearing. Get the plug out and see if the bolt and washer holding the gear to shaft is still intact and tight. Remove the bolt and drive shaft out the rear. Best to wedge the pto gear to front on each side before driving out to keep pressure off the shaft front needle bearing. 12 point socket will work on the plug. Think its 1-5/8 but could be mistaken on the size.
