If you had either the radiator or gas tank off, (or both) each may be off of the original positions by just a little. (Remember, the back of the hood rests on the front of the gas tank.) If each one is off 3/8 of an inch in opposite directions, you could have that 3/4 inch total easily. Also check the brace rod that goes across the top of the head from the gauge bracket to the radiator support and make sure the radiator is as vertical as it should be. My bet would be the radiator is out of position, if you had it off. (My $0.02 worth.jal-SD)
