The bypass port on most letter series engines is so big that the thermostat usually does not open unless using full power for tillage or belt/pto work. The bypass can be restricted to 1/4 " hole to assure better thermal warm up. The bypass is at the sp;it where the thermostat is placed, cast into the housing. It would need a stainless steel plate made like the gasket, and a smaller hole where the D shaped bypass is located. 2 new gaskets might be needed, or Permatex #2 on one side. Jim.
