fire ring is the ring of metal crimped around the cyl. bore on the gasket. I just looked at the pic's and it appears to me as this new gasket is good and the old one not good, or was incorrect. this new gasket should give you a bit more compression also, as its making the combustion area smaller. as for the reaming of guides don't know size as its machine shop work. once guides are installed valves and seats MUST be ground or replaced accordingly and valve stems measured for wear also, and all the other stuff that goes with it. but maybe you are a machinist and doing the job.
