To my memory, the S shaped link does have a pawl on the bottom side to catch in the hub basket. There is also a spring that tensions the pawl toward engagement. When the trip lever is pulled and the pawl release lever (behind the cam stop, toward the center of the plow) is allowed to let the pawl engage the basket ridges, the plow lifts. When the trip follower enters the lift stop(up position)the pawl release lever holds the pawl out of contact with the basket and the wheel just spins. the same thing happens with plow down, except the lifting link that lifts the plow is down.
