How long are you waiting to shift into gear after you depress the clutch? The transmission gears will continue to spin for several seconds after you disengage the clutch due to kinetic energy, so if you try to shift into gear right after you step on the clutch pedal, then, yes, the gears will grind because they are still spinning and you are trying to mesh a non-rotating gear with one that is rotating. If the gears grind no matter how long you wait after stepping on the clutch pedal, then I would agree that the clutch is not disengaging.
