In low range, #1 you should be ok. I used to own a 454 diesel and now run 684 diesel and both were fine with our 6' Land Pride, reverse tiller. At times, especially if around heavy roots in an orchard, a creeper gear might be nice, but you could get the job done. Since you are looking to buy versus getting by with what you already own, I would likely hold out for a diesel, perhaps that's just my preference. There are usually lots of older 454, 464, 574, 684s, etc around and I would hold out for a clean diesel model. I could also be happy with a 240, 245, 265 Massey (8 speed and not multi power) but prefer the full independent pto of the IH.
