They made A LOT of Engine errors at FARMALL. I never heard of too small an engine getting into a tractor, but I've heard of several 1086's with 1486 engines, Now 966's with 1066 or 1466 engines. The rearends should be O-K as long as you never pull it hard in the low range.
Come to think of it, We DID put a small engine into a large tractor ONCE. We put the little German D-358 for the prototype 3088 into one of the prototype 50 series chassis. Plant Mgr. Wan't real happy That day!
