I used a wire with an alligator clip on it for about a week when the one on my M went out. I wouldn't advise it. The neighbors really get too much joy out of it when they happen to see it. Especially since they will only buy green machinery.
If you have an alternator on it you are going to have an easier time with a fused light switch that has separate poles for head and tail lights. You can excite your alternator without a diode or idiot light.
I use the original switch on my A - it just has an idiot light under the fuel tank.
