As has been said NEVER remove a battery cable with the engine running that can lead to many bad things. #1 you dead. #2 you burned. #3 the alternator letting the smoke out. Takes less then an amp to kill a man and an alternator puts out 35 plus amps. If you can jumper around the solenoid and it starts the solenoid is on it way out. A weak battery or bad alternator etc would not work if all you did was jumper around the solenoid
