Okay, I think I might have figured it out. Apparently the retainer on the forward end of the shaft is missing. The capscrew is in place, but not the retainer. So although the capscrew was tight, the head wasn"t big enough to hold the gear in place without the retainer. It wasn"t the shaft sliding forward, it was the gear sliding forward on the shaft.
