Wayne, the mechanic told you correctly. The problem is that the amperage output will likely be too low to supply the lights and keep the battery recharged. If you decide to proceed as the mechanic instructed, use the battery hooked up negative ground and repolarize the generator after the time that the battery is hooked up and before the engine is cranked. The reason that this arrangement works is that the 12 volts energizes the generator field coils much stronger than original and the field strength is the main factor in determining generator voltage output.
