how tall is the stuff your cutting and what gear are you cutting in. as others have said check your blade height. I think id put it in 1st gear and raise the deck a little at a time to see if it makes a difference. also there is a slip clutch in the mower deck it should click when you step on the clutch with the mower engaged. could be gummed up its easy enough to take apart but it shouldn't matter if your going forward or back.
