Your story reminds me of a similar one. One harvest we broke a final drive on the Massey combine just before lunch. It took the rest of the day to fix. The next day we went back to the field and with each pass it would handle less and less - ending up with only half a cut possible. We rebuilt the carb twice. Nope. We drove two hours to get a new governor (Chrysler straight 6). Nope. We threw in the towel and called the mechanic out. I sat in the cab and ran the throttle up and down. He just smiled. The air cleaner line was sucked flat - the oil bath cleaner was full of chaff. It must have happened that first day and we didn't regrease since it hadn't run long before the drive broke. All that for a dirty air filter. After that we tied a gunny sack over the precleaner.
