If you hook a plug wire and a plug direct to the coil and get a good spark but NOT out a cap terminal with it and the rotor in place, sounds like a cap and/or cap and rotor problem.
It can fire with no condenser at all (or a weak but not shorted one) but the spark will be weaker. If the condenser or its wiring was a dead short theres no spark at all.
Heres my Ignition Troubleshooting Procedure, it may or may not help.
