Yup, there isn't some Greek god of distributor caps floating up in the clouds, waiting to rain lightning down on he who does not plug the #1 spark plug into the post labeled #1.
The distributor can be rotated to any position, and the gears will mesh 1000's of different ways.
In this case I agree, it does sound like the previous owner put the distributor in 180 degrees out of time, and rather than fix it, he just moved the wires one position around the cap.
He probably had no idea what he did wrong, and changing the wires made it work so he just went with it.
