Most of the starters advertised on ebay (and a few other sites) are the wrong starters. The application listings don't make sense. They occasionally list Farmall M's, W-6's, W-4's, and W-9's as using the same starter--this is completely wrong. A--they don't fit. B--the W-9 starter rotation is opposite to the Farmall M's, W-6's, & W-4's because the W-9 starter installs from the engine side of the flywheel and the others install from the clutch side.
Here are the correct part numbers for a W-9 starter. The only way I will ever buy a starter for old IH machinery (especially a W-9) is by using the part numbers. If it doesn't have one of these part numbers or cross reference over to a supplier's part number then it is the wrong starter. Period. You can hope for one that "might fit" but that doesn't usually work out very well.

A friend of mine recently thought he found a good deal on ebay for a W-9 starter so he bought it......guess what? It didn't fit at all, completely the wrong starter.
The best option is to have the original starter rebuilt then you know it will fit and work correctly.
