I was told as a boy back in the early fifties that starting rpms were faster when the clutch was disengaged on a Cub. Supposedly, this would disconnect the transmission and reduce drag. I thought that this advice was nuts because I could hear that the starter spun faster with the clutch engaged. After 50 years and several motor rebuilds, clutch replacements, and transmission repairs, it still cranks faster with the clutch engaged. It seems that the carbon throw-out bearing imposes a lot of drag on the crankshaft and rear main bearing where the thrust is absorbed.
