There are no resistors in coils. The common (incorrect) thinking is that if some coils have resistors in the circuits leading to them, that those indicating they don"t need an external resistor have one inside. The internal coils are just wound with more and thinner wire to handle higher voltage at the same current levels. If your coil says it does not need and external resistor do not use one. However!! the reason the original wiring diagram has a resistor in it, and the reason it is important is that the ignition bypass circuit (from starter solenoid to the coil side of the resistor) is used to provide cranking voltage to the coil while the engine is being started. This bypass increases the voltage at the "resistor required" coil, putting hot spark to the plugs. If a coil with no resistor required is used, that wire does nothing and the 12volt coil is operating on the 10 volts available when the engine is being cranked. This produces less spark and sometimes no start. Jim

Today's Featured Article - A Lifetime of David Brown - by Samuel Kennedy. I was born in 1950 and reared on my familys 100 acre farm. It was a fairly typical Northern Ireland farm where the main enterprise was dairying but some pigs, poultry and sheep were also kept. Potatoes were grown for sale and oats were grown to be used for cattle and horse feeding. Up to about 1958 the dairy cows were fed hay with some turnips and after that grass silage was the main winter feed. That same year was the last in which flax was grown on the farm. Flax provided the fibre which w
