Before you pull the head I would do some pressure testing. There are two different test that will tell you alot when looking for leaks.
1. I would remove rockerarm assembly and then apply air pressure to each cylinder of the engine. I have made an adapter that screws into the sparkplug hole and connects to my air commressor. You can then look in the rediator for bubbles. That will tell you which cylinder is leaking compression.
2. You will need to remove the oil pan and look for antifreeze leaking. Antifreeze is easy to spot if you are using green antifreeze. Pressureizing the cooling system helps. There is a cooling system test that is made to screw onto the top of the rediator and allows you to pump up a little pressure, 4 lbs is what I would shoot for. You could also plug in the block heater if you have one. Looking from the bottom with a flashlight works for me. You may have to wait a while before some leaks show up. I have enen let pressure on the cooling system overnight and in the morning had antifreeze on the floor.
Doing a little testing points you in the correct direction.
