I know most of it from observation. They started with A=1931 and used a letter each year until '52 when they went part way into the year then decided "V" was hard to read. So they made a few "W" then went to "X," all in '52. "Y" and "Z" were used in '53 and '54 respectively. The alphabet started over in '55. In later years they eliminated more letters so it gets confusing, but I think they went through about "H" before any more skips. Codes through 1958 are described in Guy Fay's IH Data Book. It is available from Motorbooks International or most places that can order books.
