Near me live three brothers who have more IH experience than anyone else known to me personally. They have an extensive machine shop. Their father started a garage before WW1. Here is what they do for worn "A" steering. They weld the five teeth nearest the center of the gear and grind them carefully by hand to the original profile. I asked them about the welding alloy and they said to use just mild steel alloys. This "soft" buildup does not wear the worm on the shaft. Their idea is that the teeth near the end get little wear and that when making sharp turns, the play is eliminated anyway. I suspect that this repair may not wear as long as the original. If not, the repair can be repeated. I have been planning to do a 140 steering and they gave me this advice. I trust these guys completely. Those who disagree with this idea, be easy on me. It is not my idea (but I plan to try it). Also, like old tractors, old people break easily!
