I've been doing some research on carports. A local guy sells the carolina carports brand. I've been through their online configuration utility and they have carports that are tested to withstand some pretty impressive winds and snow loads. IIRC they have a model rated for 150MPH winds, and 50lb/ft snow loads.
From what I've seen you want one that has the ribs on the roofing running parallel to the gable end, not parallel to the peak. They shed water and snow much better. They can be had with any number of walls and doors.
