Pete - 4-2-1-3 firing order merely says the distributor's installed 180 degrees out. No problem with that, so long as the wires are installed accordingly. Here's a couple more things to try before you tear into the motor too deep (presuming the distributor cap, rotor, etc are in good shape): 1 - Install a new set of D-21 or C-86 plugs. Also replace the plug wires with solid copper wires you've not already done so (do NOT use radio surpression wires!) 2 - If it's still backfiring out of #1, run a compression test on all 4 cylinders. If you find any of them low, pull the valve cover and reset the valve clearances to spec. Good luck!
