Help!!! Super M Engine oddity

Self taught on Ford & Deere, but just getting started on IHC (except simple tune ups on the Super C over the years.) Father and I found a '53 Super H and a 54 Super M complete and the right$ so... SH coming good, but SM had a bad skip/back fire which I assumed was a stuck valve, when I threw a tune up in her I saw that previous owner had the plug wires wrong, order 4-2-3-1, tuned it,
checked to see if dist was 180 out, wasn't, changed to 1-3-2-4 order, timed her, wont fire at all. Put wires back , started again, but same symptoms? Any ideas? If the cam was not timed to the crank properly would this happen? I guess that's the next attack unless I hear different. thanx!
