I have seen a 666 do exactly that. The overrunning clutch was locking the carrier solid so it would not turn in either direction, thus low side works fine. Soon as you put lever ahead the direct drive tries to take ahold , slips the ta clutch for just a bit and stalls engine. Pretty easy to check by pulling the little cover over the center of TA housing, push clutch pedal in and the TA carrier should be able to rotate one in normal direction of rotation.
