True, cold contracts, but the clamp and the bolt are both the same temperature. The expand/contract thing only works when you're expanding/contracting one of the two parts.
More than anything, I think your patience and diligence were rewarded.
What did your bolt threads look like? Were they dry or wet? Wet means the penetrant got down in there and did its job.
Usually, it doesn't seep in, but you worked on that bolt for months. Normally we just squirt it, slap a wrench on, twist it off, and start cussing.
