If rapping on the float bowl helps you've got a sticking float and/or needle. Check that the float is not caddywompas in the float bowl and hanging up on the side or something.
Not sure how to deal with needle problems anymore. They have this "viton" stuff on the tip and about 1/3 of the time they won't close, 1/3 of the time they stick shut, and 1/3 of the time they work fine, new out of the box.
