lots depends on engine condition, valves and rings and sleeve wear. the compression has to be right up there for a good start. i put sleeves and pistons and had the head totally done on my brothers 660 and that thing is running on the second revolution after holding glow plugs for 40 sec. and no smoke either. but on mine it has to crank for about 5-7 seconds before firing up then it smokes for about another minute before clearing up. also had the head of on mine and just resurfaced the seats but i see that is not good enough. also need to make sure your timing is right on also, as per manual for the tractor. and also batteries need to be in good condition as these engines require a good cranking speed to start. when everything is up to snuff these 282's start with only a couple cranks. your smoking is probably due to injector problems. with out the proper spray pattern that will cause hard starting.
