I always use a cheap dome light in place of the diode. You can't have an LED - has to be good old fashioned filament. I just mount it under the gas tank - the light goes off when it starts charging. It is kind of convenient if you need to check the oil or something in the dark. Pull the kill switch, the light comes on, and you can check things before you start. It's a pretty good warning light too. If it comes on while you are running she ain't charging.
