What do you mean by the clutch rod bottomed out, can't make it long enough or short enough? If you can't make it long enough I'd check the linkage at the th. out brg. for being bent or the cast iron t.o. brg support slots being broken off. I just checked the finger height of a press plate I replaced this summer in my Super C and it's 3 inches from the top of the fingers to the disc surface. If the pilot brg. is dry it will be hard to get in gear even with a new clutch.
