I have two alamo flails that I got in a trade and what they will cut depends on what type/weight of knives it has on it. The one that does best for me has the heavier knives attached to the drum with a clevis and pin. The other one has lighter/longer knives attached directly to the flanges on the drum. It works better in shorter grass and leaves a nice finish. It is a 6ft. cut.
The 7ft has the heavier knife set up and I cut johnson grass and weeds as tall as the tractor. These knives have a higher tip speed than the six footer. The weeds cut better than the johnson grass on the first pass. Heavy patches of johnson grass require me to drop down a gear and/or make a second pass.
What I like about flails is the way they 'shred' the material and leave it even on the field. Another bid plus is that they will pick up and cut your tracks out. Assuming that the mower is wider than the tractor tread width, or somewhat offset. I use it behind a Massey 253(48hp). Have not had it behind M or MD. We do use an 8ft rotary cutter behind a Super MTA diesel. That is all it can stand in heavy grass.
