Way back I converted a magneto to function as a distributor but if my memory is correct I used an external coil. Worked fine. I think this is what Dave has and the reason that it cranks when the handcrank is used and when the switch is released is it gets what battery voltage that is available from the weak battery.. Otherwise the voltage is too low for a spark with the starter load.
