Hand cranking was very common for farmers into the 1930's so that idea helped but a small hand crank "pony" motor could have been added rather than a complicated internal method they did use.
It would have been interesting to have listened in on some of the decision making.. I am glad they did go the way they did. It sure ran well. harvey
