I have had to change from a 6 volt coil to a 12 volt coil in 2 tractors that I changed fron a 6 to 12 volt system. Even with a resistor the 6 volt coils got hot and when this happens it will also burn your points keeping it from starting .I went through the same thing your going through but havn't had a problem in a couple of years. For some reason some people used the 6 volt coil and it worked o k for them but it didn't for me. If I were you d buy a new resistor and a new 12 volt coil.
