Using our method, we do not know if we are on the compression stroke and are ready to fire or if we are between the exhaust and the intake cycle with the intake preparing to open. If we had earlier determined which is the exhaust and which is the intake valve and we had an assistant to turn the engine to where we could watch the # 1 cylinder valves move we could have watched the intake valve open and then close to where it and the exhaust valve were "rocker arm loose". This would have assured that we were on TDC ready to fire. Since we did not do this and the engine did not run the timing is at the wrong place as is firing between the exhaust stoke and the intake stroke. Moving the distributor 180 degrees will correct the timing to put fire to the #1 cylinder between the compression stroke and the power stroke which is where it should be.
