Well, someone already posted it, but the simple and easy way is to remove the coil wire/lead. a thief won't necessarily be carrying one of those, and it is not easily bypassed.
I had my F150 stolen at one point. They removed the ignition (easy to do on the 70's F150s). I was lucky and got it back a couple of days later. Insurance covered the "missing" parts and I was on the road again.
After that, I simply took the coil wire with me wherever I would park it. It was never stolen again. Not sure if anyone tried, but if someone did try, they were not successful.
