Early F12 Kerosene tractors FS3035 to FS4655 used the two tank setup with the gas starting tank in the hood. Then the two compartment tank was used for Kerosene tractors until FS-128727 (now F14s,May of 38 ) from that point until the end of production Kerosene tractors once again had the gas starting tank in the hood.
The f12/14 were ordered as Gasoline tractors or Gas start Kerosene/Distillate tractors, not really dual fuel. Tractors ordered to use gasoline came with the single compartment tank, Tractors ordered to burn Kerosene/Distillate had the two compartment tank or 2 tanks depending on when they were built. One would assume near the end of production 38-39 the Kerosene/Distillate option was becoming obsolete and it was easier/cheaper for IH to add the starting tank to the hood than to produce a low number of two compartment fuel tanks.
