The F-20 Mag. (F-4 or E4A) should be set to fire at DC(TDC) with the advance lever full up or barely off this position. The impulse coupling DOES NOT RETARD TIMING as other mags do without external controls. Deactivating impulse on F4/E4A aids in making timing setting easier and changes nothing. For starting the advance lever should be placed just off the full up (grounded) position then moved down after running. If engine lower coolant elbow on block gets above warm (with shutters open) timing could be RETARDED. Those owners manuals tell nearly all! Careful.
