This Dist. Has Steped On My Last Nerve

Trying to start the Super AV I acquired earlier this week. I put an alternator and 12 volt battery in it. It has a 6 volt coil. So I put an inline resistor in it. With the switch on, it is 12 volt on one side of the resistor and 6 volt on the other side. I put new points, rotor button, condenser, cap, wires and plugs. Set the points at .020 and the plugs at .025. Well, it gets fire to the points, but won't go any further. Using a test light, when the points are open and I put the test light on the points, it lights up. Points closed it don't. With the points closed and you take a small screwdriver and gently open them, usually a small spark can be seen (and/or heard) between the point contacts. Nothing here. I have checked a dozen times to see if it is grounded somewhere, but can't find anything. Any ideas guys? Thanks.
