The low side sprag clutch in the TA has failed. When the clutch is pushed in the linkage pulls the dump valve out on the back of the TA to release the TA clutch. When you let the clutch back out the dump valve is sticking so the TA clutched remain disengaged. Tapping on the MCV is enough to free the dump valve so the TA clutches can again engage hydraulically. Get the dump valve freed up and your problem will go away.
