The shifter moves side to side in a slot that is formed by the shift rails. This slot is neutral. The rails need to be moved so that they line up. then the gears need to be set so they are placed where the forks are (this will also be neutral. The shifter lever probably needs its pivot repaired and maybe the ball tip remade to be round as it was when new. The pivot system may need new parts. Jim
