I got one with an O.D. the same as the I.D. of the top hose. It is in the hose, just above the upper outlet, with a hose clamp around the outside of the hose to hold it in place. I drilled a 1/4" hole in the flat plate part of the thermostat so that the pump is always able to move some coolant, even if the thermostat is closed. I did that because I didn't want the pump pumping against a deadhead.
I used to know what car it was made for, but I can't remember anymore, but it is a 180 degree thermostat. I told the guys at NAPA the diameter and the temperature and they picked it out of their book.
I have had it in for 6 or 7 years now and have had no problems. It keeps the engine temp up even when it is not working hard, yet I have pulled a plow for 4 or 5 hours at a time and it doesn't get hot either.
I tried a Super C upper outlet, with a thermostat in it, but it is the wrong diameter and the wrong angle. Won't work with the shorter radiator.
