The starter will work, but not necessarily "... be fine as is". I had a 6v. on my converted to 12v. 240U and the problem with it was that it would spin the starter too fast and sometimes the drive would not engage the ring gear. When the starter finally quit all together, I took it to the local auto-electric shop and in addition to repairing it, he changed the 12v. field coil to 6v. It made all the difference in the world how easy it starts. I believe changing the coil added about $70 to the bill, and well worth it.
