Hi, I read in one of the Farmall books (can't remember which one, sorry) that it initially had more to do with being able to steer the tractor in the field, particularly if the NFE got into a rut or a furrow - the dual front wheels, angled towards each other, helped the tractor "climb" out of ruts rather than getting bogged down in them... Makes sense on paper... Pete
